Welcome to the 181st European Study Group with Industry that will take place at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), located in Vila Real, Portugal, from the 8th to the 12th of July 2024.
These meetings aim to revitalise and strengthen the links between Mathematics and Industry, focusing on addressing industrial challenges presented by industrial partners. As part of the renowned European Study Group series, this event will convene European experts with experience in this type of event.
The success of the ESGIs lies in their distinctive format, which has been replicated worldwide. In this format, the mathematical community assembles in collaborative working groups to solve problems presented by the industry.
The ESGI aims to showcase mathematics’s skill and applicability across a broad spectrum of industrial challenges. It offers small, medium, and large companies access to a technology brimming with potential, supported by highly skilled researchers, and requiring minimal investment to deploy.
A study group is a week-long workshop bringing together mathematicians and representatives from different business sectors. At the outset, the participating companies present their industrial challenges to the mathematicians. ESGI’s objective is to give the capabilities of mathematics and its applicability in large part of the challenges and needs of the industrial world, offering small, medium, and large companies access to technology with great potential, with highly qualified researchers and requiring minimal investment to deploy.
Academic participants self-assign to working groups, each focusing on a specific industrial problem. These groups work intensively throughout the week, culminating in presentations of their findings and recommendations for further exploration on the final day. Subsequently, a comprehensive report detailing the outcomes and potential collaborations is then delivered to the respective companies.
For more information on study groups and related topics, please visit the International Study Groups website, the Smith Institute[https://www.smithinst.co.uk/ ] and the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry [https://ecmiindmath.org/]. A repository of problems and their respective reports from previous study groups can also be accessed here.
and bring new insights to existing industrial challenges
establish enduring and fruitful collaborations between mathematicians and industry;
propose new lines of research based on real-world business challenges
reinforce the importance of mathematics in industry and mathematical profiles companies
stimulate greater awareness in the community of the potential of mathematics to solve real-world problems
Companies have the opportunity to use insights from mathematical analysis to effectively address their challenges.
If you believe your company could benefit from discussing a problem with us, please contact us at esgi@utad.pt.
We would be happy to visit you, free of charge and with no immediate commitment, for an initial discussion about a proposed problem. It’s worth noting that almost all industrial challenges have underlying mathematical aspects, although these may not be immediately apparent. Some of the most successful working group projects began with problems that were not initially formulated in mathematical terms.
The confidentiality of the data provided is assured.
Participation costs for companies will be determined based on the size of the enterprise, as defined by the EU.
STUDY GROUP CHALLENGES
Here you can see the proposed challenges to be discussed during the 181st ESGI week.
Optimizing Wine Storage: Mathematical Models for Accurate Volume Determination in Diverse Fermentation Tanks
The company’s extensive wine range is linked to various fermentation and storage tanks, made from materials like stainless steel or wood, and available in different shapes and capacities (550 to 46,000 liters for stainless steel and 225 to 14,000 liters for wood). Each tank’s capacity
refers to its body, necessitating precise volume checks, typically through invasive, timeconsuming methods.
Calculating the exact wine volume is complicated when tanks aren’t fully filled, requiring a precise determination of the volume of inert gas needed. Additionally, wine volume varies with storage temperature, especially in large tanks.
The challenge is to use mathematical models to determine each tank’s total capacity, calculate the wine volume in partially filled tanks, and ascertain the required inert gas volume, accounting for temperature effects on the liquid volume.

UTAD
181 ESGI-2024 will take place at the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Complexo Laboratorial, Auditório B0.02. This institution houses teaching and research facilities on a sprawling 120-hectare eco-campus. Within this campus you’ll find the UTAD Botanical Garden, one of the largest in Europe, with a collection of around 1000 plant species.
GPS: Latitude – 41.285276 °N / Longitude – 7.740674°W
Parking
The preferred parking lot for visitors external to UTAD is Parque da Quinta de N. Sr.ª de Lourdes (41.287047, -7.737183) located less than 2 minutes from the Laboratory Blocks, the event location (free parking with 156 spaces available).
By express bus:
The main bus companies to/from Vila Real are Rede Expressos and FlixBus. In Porto, the Rede Expressos terminal is located in the Terminal Intermodal of Campanhã (TIC). Flixbus departs from the Airport or the TIC.
From Lisbon take the Rede Expressos bus from Gare Oriente Terminal or Terminal Rodoviário de Sete Rios
By plane:
The nearest international airport is in Oporto. You can also fly into Lisbon airport.
By car:
To get to Vila Real by road, you have several options depending on your starting point:
From Viseu: Take the A24 highway towards Vila Real/Sabrosa. Upon exiting the highway, follow the EN 313 road directly to the university.
From Porto: Take the A4 highway, being cautious not to exit onto IP4, especially after passing Amarante. Before reaching Vila Real, you’ll encounter the longest road tunnel in Portugal, the 5.6 km long Túnel do Marão, followed by a long bridge. Shortly after, you’ll see an exit for Vila Real (and Sabrosa). Once in Vila Real, go through two roundabouts. At the third roundabout, take the second exit to UTAD and enter through the second gate. Continue to the fourth roundabout and you’ll find an exit leading to the main entrance of UTAD (take the third exit).
From Bragança or Braga: Take the A4 and A7 motorways and follow the signs to Vila Real.
